NEW ZEALAND DEFEATS AUSTRALIA.
Bf TELEGRAPH —PKES3 ASSOCIATION. Received April 26, 4.80 p.m. SYDNEY, April 25. In the bowling match New Zealand defeated Australia by ?. points. The match drew a good attendance on the Ashfield green, and an exciting finish was witnessed. The weather was very fine, and the nfost sanguine supporters of the Maorilanders did not contemplate a victory against such a strong contingent as New South Wales and Victoria were able to put up against them. Yet to everybody's astonishment the New Zealanders romped over their opponents in the first fifteen heads, and Australia did not appear to have a chance. The visitors were 11 up on the fifth head, 22 up on the tenth, and 24 on the fifteenth head. Gradually the Australians began to pull down the lead. Up to the twentieth and in the final five heads they wore the New Zealanders down, till they were only 3 on. With four rinks finished the score stood —New Zealand 97. Australia 85. But Bentley's rink was 12 down, and a great fight for victory ensued on their last head. The spectators were much excited before the skips took a shot, New Zealand lying a couple. Scoullar, however, took one out. Strong, the opposing skip, failed to alter the position with his two shots, and Bentley managed to score, leaving New Zealand victors by a couple of points. Scores:—
Stubberfield, Maynard, Findlay, Waddel (New Zealand) 22, lost to Broomwich, Smith, Sheedy, Waxman (Australia) 24. Wallace, W. Martin, Johnston, Hain (New Zealand) 20, lost to '1 aylor, Crawley, W. W. Stephens, Barr (Australia) 30. Bunting, Thompson, Coltman, Goldstein (New Zealand) 22, beat W. Stephens, Tatchell, Wasley, Stanhope (Australia) 17. Bastings, Smith, Allnutt, Bishop (New Zealand) 33, beat Walters, Johnston, Young, Reeder (Australia) 14. Chegwin. Manning, Scoullar, Bentley (New Zealand) 19, lost to Marks, Francis, Moses, Strong (Australia) 29. At the conclusion of the match Mr McLeod, President of the New South Wales Bowling Arso-.iation, and Mr Wood, President of the Victorian Association, congratulated the New Zealanders on their splendid victory. The visitors presented Mr Banna, Secretary of the / Victorian Association, with a silver shaving outfit, in appreciation of the kindness received at bis hands.
