If the statements cabled last night in connection with the over-working of the drivers an 3 firemen of the Bendigo train, which crashed into the Ballarat train at Braybrook Junction, at midnight of Easter Monday, are correct, a serious responsibility rests with the Railway Commissioners. It is stated that the driver of the Bendigo tr<iin had been on duty 11 hours 35 minutes, while the driver and fireman of the second engine commenced duty at a quarter to five in the morning, and were still on duty eightc-cn hours later. Probably the case is exceptional, and pressure of holiday traffic, combined with defective organisation, may have necessitated unduly long hours of duty; but it seems to be a foolish policy not to make ari'ai:geivi«iits beforehand to meet possible emergencies. The extra coat of so doing would be a thousand times recouped by the extra j security to life and limb. Potsibly, howevpr, the statement regarding excessive hours of duty on this occasion is exaggerated, and that the authorities are in no way to bliime on that core. It is lo be hoped this may prove to be the case.
