TELEGRAPH CODES.

STATEMENT BY POSTMASTERGENERAL. Received April 23, 8.34 a.m. LONDON.ApriI 22. The Right Hon. Sydney Buxton, Postmaster-General, in a letter in reply to the London Chamber of Commerce in reference to the International Telegraphic Conference, declared that he had no intention of supporting any proposal for the withdrawal of the privilege of using codes or artificial word. 0 . No such proposal has been made. But, added the- Miivster, he thinks it only right to expece the public, equally with the code makers, to cooperate in keeping the privilege within reasonable bounds, and observing the spirit of the regulation. Hence it was desirable that the condition regarding pronounceability should be more clearly defined, but the only intention is to adopt a generous interpretation, owing to the bull of existing codes.
