CHARGE OF FALSE PRETENCES.

NELSON, April 21. At the Magistrate's Court, to-day, Robert Young Ferguson, a new settler at Tadmor, who has taken a prominent part in the formation of the local Scottish Society, and a recent entertainment, by the Ashburton Pipers, was charged with having, at Geraldine, on 29th January, obtained £5 from William Baxter by means of false pretenc2s—to wit, a valueless cheque. Accused was arrested at Tadmor yesterday. He said he could not understand why the warrant had n«t been served earlier. It had been issued in February, yet the local police knew nothing of it till yesterday. Accused was remanded to Geraldine on bail.
