SAD DEATH AT UPPER PLAIN.
YOUNG, MAN FOUND SHOT IN BATHROOM. Late last evening news reached Masterton that Mr Edward T. Meredith, a son, of the late R. R. Meredith, had been found dead in a bathroom at the residence of his grandmother, Upper Plain, with a bullet wound in his neck. It appears that deceased,, who was only 19 years of age, was playing cards with Dr Dawson, of Pahiatua, and two of his aunts until about 10 o'clock, and he seemed to be in his usual spirits during the evening. At the conclusion of the game he ate a hearty supper, and then made preparation for a bath. At' about 10.30 the household were startled by the report of a gun, and on rushing to the bedroom, Mr Meredith was found to be in a crouched position by the bath, with a rifle by his side and a wound in his neck. Dr Dawson acted at once, but found life to bo extinct, and on Dr Cowie being immediately summoned the latter also could do nothing but pronounce death to have occurred instantaneously. ,An inquest will beheld probably to-day.
