An effort is being made to raise money from those interested in the representation of New Zealand at the Olympian games, to be held in London shortly, for the purpose of sending Mr Harry Kerr, the Australasian amateur walking' champion, to
compete in the contests. Mr H. St
A. Murray, the champion amateur 440 yards runner, has been provided for by the Christchurch residents, and leaves for England by the Oruba, railing from Sydney on the 2nd May; and athletic enthusiasts desire to send Mr Kerr with him. With the object of securing the practical sympathy of the Masterton people in this matter, Mr A. Davies, Treasurer of the Wellington centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Associaton,. is on a vis-it to the town, and hopes to rai.se part of the money necessary to the despatch of Mr Kerr. Doth the athletes referred to are, in the phraseology of the cult, "topnotchers," and it is believed they would win fame for the dominion in the Mother Country. The men have proved their quality in Australia and. New Zealand,, and it dews not
appear that two better representatives of New Zealand athletics could be procure:!. It would be an tn;.-our agemc-.it to Mr Murray if a colleague went Home with him, and »3 the amount required to send him- to London and carry nun through the contests is comparatively small, there should he no difficulty in providing 1 the wherewithal. Encouragement of athleticism is a very desirable tbins. It should, indeed, form part of our school education. Here at any rate, is an opportunity that might well be taken advantage of.
