CARTERTON LIBRARY.
The report to be presented to the annual meeting of the Carterton Librnry'Cotmnittee to be held on the 22nd init., is as foilows:—'Your committee has much pleasure in reporting a very great improvement in the library generally during the last year. The crue test of interest lies in the number of subscribers. A net increase of twenty-one new -memDers must be considered satisfactory. The bilance-sheet shows a substantial increase in revenue, and the committee is encouraged to think that the public are beginning to more fuliy realise the very valuable asset they possess in the public library. The reading room has been t.till .further improved by additional illustrated papers and magazines of the best type, and the committee gratefully acknowledge the kindness of many friends in supplying magazines, etc., free of coat. The system .if obtaining u monthly supply of newest and latest books gives much satisfaction. During the year a supply of books was received from England, and a second order to the value of £25 was dispatched in tha beginning of last month. The library has been considerably improved by the installation of the gas, water, and drainage, and these comforts are greatiy appreciated. To meet the heavy consequent expenditure, an appeal was made to the public, and the whole amount was generously and oluntarily subscribed. The Committee's greatful thanks are specially due to Mr W. Booth and. Mr W. 0. 'Buchanan, for large donations, and to Mr R. Drummond, of Clarveille, for a half share in a "Kinderspiel Concert" by which a net amount of £4 7s was received. Thanks are also due to the Rev. Father Cabill, nnd Messrs R. G. Welch, G .W. Deller, r.nd W. Moore for donations towards the same object. The committee begs to thank subscribers for kindly assistance in metalling the yard and putting the stables in order. Annual subsidies are also gratefully acknowledged from the Carterton Borough Council and South Wairarapa County Council. It is sincerely trusted that sunscribers will bring the claims of the institution under the notice of their friends, and each endeavour to secure at least one new member. With nn increased membership, and consequent additional revenue, much more could be done, and further improvements effected. —\V. MOORE, Chairman.
