THE HOP INDUSTRY.
IN AN UNSATISFACTORY CONDITION. Received April 17, 9.52 a.m. MELBOURNE, April 17. Owing to the unsatisfactory condition of the hop industry, leading growers are holding a conference in order to formulate a more practical working scheme. ; It was resolved that the formulas of all compounds should be published on each barrel and bottle of malt liquor produced within the Commonwealth. The hop industry is reported to be in an unsatisfactory condition in England as well. A cable message published a few weeks ago stated that at a meeting of hop-growers in Kent a resolution was carried which declared that the time was ripe for tht. Government to take action to protect the English growers against unfair foreign competition. Some speakers at the meeting suggested that a duty of 40s per cwt. should be imposed on imported hops. The hongrowing industry in England is at a low ebb, and the area under cultivation has greatly decreased. It amounts now only to 45,000 acres. Prices are low owing to the competition of foreign hops from countries where the area under cultivation is expanding and the yield increasing.
