MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINAKY MEETING. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening, there being present His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine) and Crs Pauling, Eliott, Haughey, Morris, Pragnell, Ewington, Prentice and Yarr. In connection with the pelition of Messrs T. G. Mason, Margaret Johnston, Roberts Johnston and W. Hirschberg, Makora, to have their properties excluded from the Borough area, and which was referred to the Works Committee, a report was submitted advising the Council to oppose the severance. Crs Eliott and Ewington supported the application", maintaining that farm lands should not be subjected to the special Borough rates when they received no,direct benefit from their contributions. Cr Morris supported the action of the Works Committee in advising that the severance for should be opposed. The farm lands mentioned had bpen greatly advan n H in value by the progress made within the Borough, and he felt sure the owners contemp'nted cntl'nor up these holdings at no distant date. The report of the Wor.cs Committee was adopted. The report of the Gas and Finance Committee was read, and after oibcussion was adopted. The minutes of the Park, Library and Fire Cnmm : ft»e were confirmed. The sum of £lO was Refunded to St. Patrick's Sports Society for use of the Park Oval on St. Patrick's Day. A deputation of residents in Hogg Crescent waited on the Council and urged that something should be done to the footpath in that street. It was pointed out that as soon as the wet weather set in the street would become practically impassable unless the footpaths were were at least graded and metalled. Messrs Hosking, Chapman and King ably supported the claims of the deputation. Cr Morris suggested that the work might be pushed on .at once if the residents affected would contribute toward 3 its cost. Cr Haughey thought the application of the deputation should be carried out. Cr Morris moved that the work be carried out, providing the residents' contributed half the cost, but a motion by Cr Prentice that the question be referred to the Works Committee for a report, was carried. Messrs Gawith and Logan, acting on behalf of the trustees in the B. P. Ferry estate, made application to have Perrv Street, from Chapel Street to Queen Street, exempted from the by-law affecting street widening—The request was granted. The Masterton Fire Brigade asked for a grant of £2O to enable the Brigade to carry on until it was taken over by the Fire Board.-—Granted. Mr lf s. Laing-Meason wrote stating that the work at the new intake had been well carried out, and that | an ample supply of water was now J coming through. J It was decided to grant the Fire I Police the use of their present station, subject to three months' notice, the rent to be fixed by the Library Committee. A letter was received from Mr C. A. Pownall, re the granting of a right-of-way on the site recently occupied by the old Empire Hotel. The proposed right-of-way would traverse from Queen Street to Chapel Street. —lt was decided to grant the request, provided the right-of-way was asphalted and kept in order. An application from Mr Pownall for a right-of-way from Smith Street to the rear of premises abutting on Queen Street was granted, under similar conditions.
