A TRAGEDY. Received April 13, 9.50 a.m. MELBOURNE, April 13. A man named Deutschmann murdered his wife, and shot his father-in-law, at Ararat. The couple had lived unhappily, and Mr Collie, the father-in-law, remonstrated with Deutschann for his demeanour towards his wife. Deutschmann, after some further heated remarks, shot Mr Collie, but without serious effect. He then shot his wife twice, with fatal results. He has been arrested. AN EARTHQUAKE. Received April 13, 9.50 a.m. j ADELAIDE, April 13. A sharp earthquake was felt at Quorn, Carrieton and Melrose, in :South Australia, early on Friday Buildings weie shaken and the .crockery rattled. CAVENDISH CHAIR OF PHYSICS. ACCEPTED BY PROFESSOR BRAGG. Received April 13, 10 a.m. ADELAIDE, April 13. Professor Bragg, connected with the university for twenty-four years, has accepted the Cavendish Chair of Physics at the Leeds University. ACCIDENT TO A STEAMER. Received April 13, 10.55 p m. SYDNEY, April 13. The steamer Perth reports that she saw rockets being sent up as signals of distress off the Ta3manian coast at midnight o» Friday. She bore down and found the steamer Karori with a broken thrust shaft. The Perth stood by till Saturday night. The mails from the Karori were transhipped. The engineers effected repairs to the disabled steamer, which later proceeded to Sydney under easy steam.

Received April 14, 12.45 a.m. SYDNEY, April 13. Brookes is unable to visit England this year to defend the title of tennis champion of All England, and the world's championship.
