COURT RETURNS.

■QUARTER ENDING MARCH 31st. Following are the quarterly returns to March 3lst for the Magistrate's 'Court at Masterton : Magisterial sittngs, 24; sittings before Justices of the Peace, 36; total ,60. Circuit cases: Magisterial only, '67, (1 extended jurisdiction.) The aggregate amount sued for was .£1,820 19 4d, and the aggregate -amount recovered £743 fis sd. The number of applications heard I in Court of Chambers, was 13; •orders made (other than on judgment .summons), 10; plaints entered, 214; distress warrants issued, VSO; judgment ammonses issued, 27; orders made on judgment summons, 13; •warrants of committal issued, 3; ■ summonses and other processes served, 267; distress warrants executed, :25; warrants of committal executed fbv bailiff, 3. The amount of Civil fees paid in stamps was £B3 3s. Licensing fees, .£3 10s. persons were summoned or apprehended as against 168 for the corre••ktonding quarter last year; 13 were iSischarged for want of prosecution or ■evidence, against 4in 1907; 8 were dismissed on the merits (none in 1097); 9 were committed for trial cr sentence, as against 3 in the 1907 quarter; 164 were summarily convicted, compared with 122 in 1907. Fines were imposed in 114 offenders, 7 peremptory imprisonments were ordered; 12 orders were made, and 30 were convicted and discharged with a caution. Criminal fees paid amounted to £l3 Is, and fines to £B6 14s, total £99 15s, as compared with £7 12s paid in fees to March 31. t last year, and £27 lis in fines, total £35 3s. The District Court returns show that 2 actions were proceeded with and one discontinued. The aggregate amount sued for was £428, aid ■the aggregate amount recovered being £54. Five applications were marie for probate and one for letters of administration, all being granted. Two debtors' petitions in bankruptcy and one creditor's? petition were filed. There were no criminal casvs, nor were there any for the first quarter last year.
