NEW ZEALAND V. VICTORIA. VISITORS WIN THE RUBBER. BY TELEGRAM! —PRESS ASSOCIATION . Received April 8, 9.46 p.m. MELBOURNE, April 8. At St. Kilda to-day, the New Zealand bowlers defeated Victoria by 123 to 120.
The visitors met with a cordial reception on the St. Kilda Green, which was in good order. The following are the details:— Oliver, Tuckett, Wright, Waxman (Victoria) 21, were defeated by Bastings, Martin, Scoullard, Bentley (New Zealand) 26. Bentley led off with three, and then failed at three heads, while the Victorians made seven, including a brace from Bentley, and three from Waxman. At the tenth head the Victorians were 12 and the New Zealanders 7. In the next five heads Bentley doubled the total. The Victorians were then two ahead. During the remainder of the game the New Zealanders made the best of the play, eventually winning by five.
Jamieson, Collins, Stephens, Wood (Victoria) 11, lost to Neave, Maybard, Coltman, Goldstein (N.Z.), 41. Morrison, R. Woods, Gravoll, Smith (Victoria), 40, defeated Wallace, Gibson, Findlay, Haiti (New Zealand) 16. Hain scored 4in the first head, but the Victorians made 6 in the next two heads, including a fiver. The New Zealanders only scored two singles in the next eleven heads, when the total was 19 to 18. In the next eleven hiads Smith only failed in two' heads, scoring freely. Hain never recovered, only scoring twice in the last nine heads, losing by 24. Strieff, Shaw, Lecoulliard, Mason (Victoria) 18, lost to Chetwin, Thompson, Johnston, Allnutt, (New Zealand) 25. This was a very even game at the early stages. The New Zealanders led by 3 at the tenth head, by 4 at the fifteenth head, and by 8 at the twentieth head. The visitors eventually won by 7 after a good game. Warner, Jnckson, Grut, Harrison (Victoria) 30, beat Stubberfield, Waddel, Smith, Bishop (New Zealand) 15. The latter only scored one in the first six heads, while their opponents made 11. The New Zealanders scored 3 and 2, and then failed again fur five heads, while Harrison had a total of 23. In the last twelve heads Bishop only secured 8, while the Victorians scored well, and won by two to one. By winning the match the New Zealanders win the rubber.
