PERSONAL.

Mr J. D. Heagerty is announced as a candidate for the office of Mayor of the Borough of Greytown. Mr Chas. Thomas, brother of Mr Geo. Thoma3, of Dalefield, is reported to be lying seriously ill in the Greytown Hospital. Mr P. Young, the well-known local insurance agent, who has been on a six weeks business visit to the South Island, returned to Masterton on Friday evening. Mr W. Thomson, stationmaster at Greytown, will leave to-day on his annual holiday. During his absence his place will he taken by Mr Casey, relieving stationmaster.

The Hawke's Bay Education Board has appointed Mr Richard Clarkson, M.A., of Normanby, director of technical education in succession to Mr H. H. Robjohns, resigned.

Mr Harry V. Sawtell. for many years a well-Known resident of Wellington, and a gymnastic performer of much more than average merit, died at Christchurch on Friday.

Mr R. T. Noble-Beasley, governor of Wanganui Gaol, who met with a serious accident lately, and had to have a leg amputated as a result of his injuries, is now reported to be making satisfactory progress, though he will have to remain in huspitai for several weeks longer.

The Rev. C. Blair, of Greytcwn, preached his farewell sermon at the Carterton Methodist Church, yesterday morning, to a large congregation. Mr Blair will leave for Westport this week. The Rev. W. W. Avery will succeed Mr Biair in the South Wairarapa circuit.

Mrs Savage, wife of Mr C. Savage, of Hope Street, died on Friday evening. The funeral, which took place yesterday afternoon, was very largely attended. Deceased was a very old colonist, and was greatly esteemed. Her end was rather sudden, although she had not enjoyed good health for some time past.

Mr E. E. Chamberlain, of Masterton, who, with his wift and daughters, leaves on a trip to the Old Country this month, was the recipient of a joint presentation, on Saturday afternoon, from the Ceneral Committee of the Maoterton A. and P. Association, and the Directors of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society, of which bodies Mr Chamberlain is a prominent member, being treasurer of the latter. The presentation was made by Mr T. P. Lett. President of the Caledonian Society, in an appropriate speech, and consisted of a handsome travelling bag and a travelling rug. Messrs J. D. Craickshank, President of the A. and P. Association, and G. Heron also made speeches eulogising Mr Chamberlain's sterling qualities as a settler and a patron of every organisation having the welfare of 'the community as its object. An adjournment was afterwards made to the Arcadia Tea Rooms, where Mr Chamberlain was entertained at afternoon tea. Hearty cheers were given for the recipient and his family, and the best wishes were extended from all for a pleasant voyage and a speedy return.
