HORTICULTURAL MATTERS.

SOCIETY FORMED IN MASTERTON. REPRESENTATIVE MEETING. A meeting of persons interested in the formation of a Horticultural Society in Masterton was held in the Exchange Hall last evening. There were about thirty persona (including several ladies) present, representative of both amateur and professional horticulturists, Mr J. Caselberg being voted to the chair. The Chairman made a few preliminary remarks as to the objects of the meeting, stating that Masterton should now be in a position to support a healthy Horticultural Society. Other towns of a much smaller size than Masterton boasted flourishing societies, and in Masterton horticulture was very extensively carried on. It was unanimously decided, on the motion of Mr W. B. Chennells, seconded by Mr M. A. Vaniham, that a Society be formed, the name to be the Masterton Horticultural and Industrial Society.

Officers were then elected as follow:—President, Mr VV. H. Beetham; Vice-Presidents, Dr Cook and Mr J. C. Alpass; General Committee, E. Hale, W. Hirschberg, J. Caselberg. W. Kemp, F. A. Hosking, R. W. Cook., M. A. Varnham, W. P. James; Secretary, Mr N. H. James; Treasurer, Mr J. R. Nicol; Auditor, Mr H. M. Boddington. The election of the ladies section, limited to eight, was heUi over. It was decided that the secretary's honorarium should be .£lO 10s. The anrtual subscription fee was fixed at £1 for honorary members (entitling the holder to a family ticket), and 10s for ordinary members (entitling the holder to free entrance fees for exhibits).
