A CLERGYMAN'S CONDUCT.
THE CASE OF .CANON ..NASH. HEARSAY JE.UMQ.URS. Received April 4, <B*3s;-aim. LONDON, Mareh,3l. Enquiries show that the .accusations agaiaat ;Canoh .:Nash, of Geelong, known as the '?No. _2 .charge;" rest entirely on statements made by' Canon Bardsley, who '.was .vicar .of HuddersfMd when .Mr 'Nash'.was curate there, to the Bishop . of 'Lichfield and others, which possibly reached the ears of Bx. .Moule, Bishop of Durham. Dr. Moule now caills ithese state-, ments hearsay r.umom\s, and (Canon Bardsley has written on the subject as follows:—"As,a matter of justice, and honour, w>ith the evidence now' before me, I cannot, confirm,my statement to the IBishap of .Lichfield." ; Nevertheless, Archbishop Clarke,' of Melbourne., says he holds twritten, statements in connection ,with the No. 2 charge—which is an accusation relating to Mr .NasH's (.conduct I towards a lady member ,cf Canon ! Bardsley's family—ithe gravity of which justifies Ms .refusal <to ,reinstatu Mr Nasb ;ss incumbent of Christ Church, Geeiong. a loyal snEsaare. Rece ; ved April 1„ [ttQ.4,7 MELBOURNE, April IV. The vestry of Christ Church, Gee~ , long, resolved to give loyal support; ; to no other nomination ifout that iof Canon Nash, unless evi- I dence was produced to aUer the.decision.
The case of Canon Nash Itas excited, a good deal of interest an Victoria. A Nash Defence Committee was formed in Geelong, and Mr G, S. Faulkner accompanied Canon Nash to England to investigate certain charges of misconduct again*t the latter while he was curate atHuddersfield. A recent caLlegram stated . that Mr G. S. Faulkner, after | , shaving made prolonged inquiries was not able to find a trace of anything SiO justify a charge of any kind against Mr Nash. The message went on to say:—"Mr Faulkner saw Canon Bacdsley, who was vicar at Huddersfieitl when Mr Nash was curate there.. Canuan Bardsley has given other details .of serious gravity respecting an incident which happened in his (Canon Bardsley's) family. This incident,' Canon Bardsley states, led to Mr Nash's expulsion from the vicarage and to Canon Bardsley's intervention I to preverot Mr Nash's promotion."
