HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT.

I'he Department of Industries anc Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, March 28th, 1908 I'he mutton market is firm. Stocks of New Zealand mutton on hand, are light, and small shipments are ex .pected. Canterbury mutton is quoted -at 4§d for light-weights, 3£d for 'heavy-weights per lb; other than Canterbury at 4£d for light-weights, ■3§d for heavy-weights per lb. There is a good demand for all lamb, -and supplies are increasing. Can- • terbury brands are quoted at s|d, fend other than Canterbury at sJdper m !>>• J The beef market is quiet, but firm, and there is an increasing dejmand for better grades. Hindquarers lave quoted at 3§d, forequarters at 2£d per lb. ' v / The butter market is quiet, but >x "*' ' steady, and buyers a!re holding back expecting prices to go lowsr. There is a good local but no speculative demand. Choicest New Zealand butter is quoted&t Ills; Danish, 113s, Australian 108s; and Argentine 108s per cwt. The cheese market is steady, and there is a better demand. White makes are quoted at 60s, coloured at 62s per cwt. The hemp market is quiet but .rather steadier, and heavy shipments :are expected from Manila. The following are the current quotations 'Good, fair grade, on spot, i£24 10s; lair grade, on spot, £22; fair current on spot, £24 10s. April-June shipments are quoted as follow: Good fair grade, £23 10s; fair grade, £2l 10s; fair current Manila, £23 10s per ton. The cocksfoot market is firm, ow ing to speculative demand. There are light stocks on hand, and it is .reported that the cocksfoot seed harvest in New Zealand this season is Jight. There is no change in prices •to report. • The wool market is rather duller. Received March 30, 8.57 a.m. LONDON, March 29. Lambs—Canterbury, light and me"dium, s|d; North Island, sfd; rest unchanged. Hemp market.—Quiet, but firm. ■February-April, £24 10s. T Owing to large arrivals rabbits ;are rather easier. Sydney are retailing at from 14s 6d to 15s; young, 12s '6d to 13s. Fair competition; prices "unchanged. Waihuka, 5Jd. The catalogue to date totals 109,859 bales; sold, 89,050. Th* wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 4,240,000 quarters; for the Continent, 2,780,000; Atlantic shipments, 97,000; Pacific, 79,000. Received March 30, 9.55 p.m. LONDON, March 30. The wool sales will close on April .'2nd.
