The men employed in the M'Kenzie Timber Yard struck when about to discharge the Kaiapoi, from Kaipara, on the.ground of the employment of four non-unionists.

A meeting of the deep-sea steamship .companies resolved to give every possible practical support to the coastal companies in their struggle for the maintenance of the principle of freedom of contract. It was also decided to assist the coastal companies by procuring engineers and officers for their ifleets.
