A sensational act was witnessed at the Oamaru swimming races held on Saturday last, when an individual essayed to perform what is known as "Monte Christo," being tied up in a weighted bag and thrown into the water. The secret of the success of the performance consists in the tying of the bag, the performer, under water, being able to release himself and make a gracefnl appearance upon the surface. Unfortunately, the mouth of the bag used was tied not wisely but too well, and the performer failed to reappear in due course. A couple of divers went Htnvn to investigate, and they rescued the unfortunate individual, still securely bagged, much to the relief of everybody present, and especially the central figure in what 'might easily have pioved a regrettable tragedy.
