THE RECENT BUSH FIRES.
A LAW SUIT AT DANNEVIRKEIMPORTANT DECISION. DANNEVIRKE, March 26. A case of interest to farmers was i decided by the Magistrate, Mr McCarthy, to-day. It appeared that during the recent bush fires in the Weber district one settler took advantage of the wind to light a fire in order to fight one approaching. After three days the wind changed and the fires followed the original course extending to the property (a neighbouring one) on which the fire was lit and caused damage to the value of £299 19s. After a lengthy hearing lasting all day the Magistrate gave judgment for £IOO damages, holding that the farmer lighting the fire on the ad- . joining property to plaintiff was responsible although there were many | other fires in the district. The Magistrate expressed the opinion that * legislation should be passed providing >. a regulation for fire-lighting. He f pointed out that many bush settlers ' and Crown tenants were compelled to \ clear bush, and burning was the only 3 practical way.
