FEATHERSTON.
(From a Correspondent). Wednesday. A young draught mare belonging to the Wairarapa Racing Club was found dead on Monday morning, having been staked by a post. The racehorse Elevation will be shipped to Sydney by the steamer "Ulimaroa" on Friday. A petition from about twenty ratepayers, asking for a poll to be taken on the question of rating on the unimproved values of land in the town, was presented to the Feather&ton Town Board on Monday night, but as the required number under the Act had not signed the requisition, it was referred back. It is understood that further steps will be taken to ascertain the views of the ratepayers on the matter, and Mr P. J. O'Regan, of Wellington, will be asked to come to Featherston and give an address on the subject. Rain still continues to fall in this district, accompanied with southerly weather, and there is no immediate prospect of the weather changing.
