TURF NOTES.
(By "Zetland"). THE MASTERTON MEETING. Owing to the continuous rain during the past week the course proper at Opaki will be on the heavy side and the '.-nances of many of the contestants will therefore be most materially affected. Yesterday morning the outside of the course was used, <ind this was found to be in good order, although somewhat slippery. W. Garrett opened proceedings by sending Blue Ribbon a fast five furlongs, and then once round slow. Locliiela ran half a milo in good style. Merrie Rose galloped a mile and a quarter at top, and finished up her task very well. Royal Blue was sent twice round and - Platypus went about seven furlongs in a workmanlike manner. Gaelic wa3 given slow work over a mile, and the Merrie England filly went once round, and oprinted home fast. Hinerangi ran over five furlongs, and Sealer was allotted good working exercise. Nitchevo was moved along six furlongs with a light-weight up. This mare is not a free worker, but does better with thri colours up. Chatterer and Chicane were associated in a fast five furlongs gallop. At half-way the latter appeared to have the best of it.but at the finish Chatterer was half a length in front. Sunoonnet skipped over half a mile fast, and Aberration and Moloch were sent together over seven furlongs. Aberration, with a light weight up, had slightly the best of the finish, Moloch not galloping well on the slippery track. Mon Amie sprinted over half a mile in fair time, and Naurnai sprinted ever three furlongs at top. The Conqueror gelding is a bit big in condition, and blew a bit at the finish. Several dthers were exercised after breakfast, and the Tauherenikau and Taratahitrained horses engaged at the meeting arrived in Mastorton during the day. Excellent acceptances have been received, and should the weather be fine a successful gathering should be recorded. The Club have carried out a number of improvements at the course recently, which will no doubt bo appreciated by patrons. Mr A. Hathaway, the Club's popular secretary, has all the arrangements for tho meeting well in hand.
