THE ENGINEERS' STRIKE.
MEN WRONGLY ADVISED. Received March 24, 9 a.m. LONDON, March 23. Mr G. N. Barnes, Labour M.P., and general secretary to the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, in a speech in London, said the engineers in the North-east had been wrongly advised to reject the terms of settlement proposed, inasmuch as arbitration would have yielded better results than a strike fought on a falling market. The vote, he added, had weakened the influence of trade unions. The engineers recently rejected a proposal for a settlement of the dispute and decided to resist a reduction in wages.
