HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. BY TELEGRAPH—PBKBS ASSOCIATION". WELLINGTON, March 23. The High Commissioner cables from London, under date March 21st, as follows:—There is a scarceness of prims quality mutton. Holders are firm, and trade is very disappointing there being only a hand to mouth demand. The following are the current quotations:—Canterbury, 4fld; North Island, 3gd; River Plate, 3|d; Australian, 3£d. The lamb market is firm. There is a good demand for all brands, although high prices are restricting business. Canterbury lamb is quoted at 6|d, and other than Canterbury at 5Jd. There is a better demand for beef, especially for hindquarters, which are quoted at 3|d. *orequartera are bringing 2gd. Small holders of butter are forcing sales, and a "bear" movement is reported, but such action is considered unwarranted. Light shipments are expected, and none is held in stock. Choicest New Zealand is quoted at 113s, Australian 110s, and Danish 120s per cwt. The cheese market is dull, and a complaint has been received of immaturity and openness in New Zealand brands. White makes are quoted at 59s and coloured 61s per cwt. There aie signs of improvement in the hemp market, with a better demand. The following are current quotations:—Good fair grade, on the spot, £24; fair grade, on the spot, £2l 10s; fair current Manila, £24; April-May shipments, good fair grade, £23 10s; fair grade, £2l 10s. The cocksfoot seed market is excited, buyers offering freely, and there are light stocks on hand. Bright clean 1711: seed is quoted at 84s per cwt. The wool market is quiet at a decline. Bradford tops are quoted as follows:—36'a low crossbreds, lOd; 40's low crossbreds, 10gd; 44's medium crossbreds, Is 0&d; 50's halfbreds, Is 5Jd; 56's quarterbreds.. Is BJd; 60's merinos, 2s OJd.
