BALLARAT CUP.
MELBOURNE, March 20. The Ballarat Cup race resulted : Boidol, 1; Albolith, 2; Proceed, 3. Won by half a length. Time, 2min 12 l-ssec. It is marvellous the amount of racing that is got through under the English Jockey Club rules in the short season, for it must be remembered that they do not race on the flat all the year roand as in Australia. The Ra:ing Calendar for 1907 shows that 1,634 races were run off in England last year, the prize money to the winners of which was £487,908 19s. In Ireland there were 361 races for £37,192 17s, and Scotland had 108, the winners receiving £14,716, which makes a giand total of 2,103 races and the prize money £539,815 16s. This great sum does not include the amounts that have been paid over to second and third horses, which would amount to a big sum The three-year-olds captured a lot of money in handicaps, as the 511 winners were handed over between them £143,288. How the distances have been cut down is shown by the fact that there was not, according to this list, a race over three miles last year under Jockey Club rules. In Ireland they had two, and one run over four miles. In England there were 64 races run over four furlongs and under five; 575 at five and under six; 317 at six and under seven; 297 over a mile; 456 over a mile and under two; and 35 at two miles and under three. Of course the majority of the short-distance events were "for two-year-olds.
