HI TELEGRAPH —PKESS ASSOCIATION'. AUCKLAND, March 18. It is stated that sensational developments are expected concerning a race at the recent Auckland racing club's summer meeting. It was rumoured at the time that the victory of a certain horse in one event was unexplained and unpalatable to his connections, and that the rider ■was soundly abused after returning to the scale for winning. Since then it is understood the rider has placed the Auckland Racing Club authorities in possession of his version of the case, and a full investigation will take place.
MASTERTON ACCEPTANCES,
Acceptances for the first day's races and entries for the Maiden Hack Race are due at 9.30 o'clock to-night.
TURF NOTES
(By "Zetland.")
In view of the Masterton meeting, next' week, the majority of the locally trained horses aro being moved along in their work at the Opaki tracks. Yesterday morning there was a good muster of track workers. Blue Ribbon, who is improving, and Lochiela, were given .light tasks by trainer W. Garratt. Merrie Rose strode out over a mile in a very taking manner, and Lucrietius ran six furlongs in fair time. Royal Blue and Platypus were restricted to easy pacing, and Nitchevyo went twice round slowly. Moloch and Aberration, both looking well, were associated in a good working gallop over a mile. They rattled over the last two furlongs very resolutely, and there was little to choose between them at the finish Osiris and Sealer ran together over six furlongs, the latter finishing in front. Satisfactory working exercise was allotted the Gipsy King mare, Traylock, Hinerangi, Black Patch, Gaelic, Dulcinea, Thera, Conqueror filly, Tainui. Sunbonnet went six furlongs, running fast to the post from the two furlongs mark. San Julie was given twice round at an oasj gait, and finished up well. A number of visiting horses will be on the tracks by Monday next. The Masterton Racing Club have just erected one of Mr Oates' patent number boards on the Opaki racecourse. It stands about 17 feet from the ground, and as the numbers indicating the horses starting measure 12 ■inch'js by 14 inches they can be seen from any part of the enclosures, which will be a great improvement on the old method of displaying the .numbers.
The rain that fell during the afternoon and evening of yesterday will make a vast improvement in the ; going on the track. The secretary reports that all the improvements on the racecourse have •now practically been completed, and if the weather is fine everything /points to a very successful meeting. The second meeting of the Wellington Pony and Galloway Racing > €lub will be held at Miramar on Saturday next. Good fields will be found competing each event, and the racing should be spirited throughout. In the principal events, leading ponies such as Inspiration, Miretta, Lady Mason, Kitty, Weka, and Insanity will he amongst contestants, ;andquitea number of lesser lights will be found in the other races. Wairarapa will be represented by at least six ponies, and as £ome of these are in very forward condition, a win may come this way. The meeting is sure to be capably managed and is certain to be a successful one.
