Katipo spiders are said to have poisoned several people at Foxton recently. These venomous insects are stale,! to be most dangerous after a long spell of dry weather. Mr Justice Cooper inflicted some heavy lines at the Paimerston North I Supreme Court, yesterday morning, William Waugh, convicted of wounding Constable Connor while in the execution of his duty was fined £IOO, in default two years' imprisonment, and ordered to find sureties of £3OO for his future good behaviour. His Honour said he took into consideration the prisoner's extreme age, and the fact that he was not found guilty of intent, and this moved him to lenij ency. Charles Fitton, convicted of assaulting William Roich with a riding whip, was also fined £IOO, and ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution and to find sureties of the peace totalling £I.OOO, in default two years' imprisonment. He was advised by the judge to leave the country if he could pay the fine.
