PROTECTION OF INFANT LIFE.
* -» BY TEI,EOF«APH —PRESS ASSOCIATION WELLINGTON, March 16. There was a large gathering of ladies and others, including the Hon. G.Fowlds(Minister of Public Health), Dr Mason (Chief Health Officer), the Hon. Dr Collins, M.L.C., and other representatives of the medical profession, at the Town Hall this afternoon. The gathering was held under the auspices of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, and was held to further the movement inaugurated by Dr Truby King for the protection of infant life. It was decided to call the nurses employed by the Wellington Society "Lady Plunket Nurses," in honour of Her Excellency Lady Plunket, who is taking such a keen interest and an active part in iurthering. the objects of the Society. Lady Plunket addressed the meeting, urging the need for improved feeding of infants and better attention to mothers and prospective mothers. Drs Mason, Collins and Young, and Hon. G. Fowlds also delivered addresses. The doctors pointed out that a large proportion of infantile mortality which was preventable was due to improper feeding and ignorance generally on the part of mothers.
The need for a purer milk supply was emphasised by most of the speakers.
