"CREEP" IN A MINE. RAILWAY LINE LEFT SUSPENDED IN THE AIR. Received March 16, 10.15 a.m. SYDNEY, March 16. A "creep" has occurred in Block 14, Broken Hill. A railway line which runs through the block to the British mine has been left suspended three feet in the air. Little damage has been done underground. AN ISLAND TRAGEDY. Received March 16, 10.55 a.m. SYDNEY, March 16. News from the Islands states that the attack made on Mr Wellings, purser of the South Australian, was quite unpremeditated. He was walking with several others when a native whom he had never seen before struck him with an axe, almost severing his aim. Gangrene set in. (The purser was attacked while ashore at Futuna Island, in the New Hebrides group. He was rescued by a party from the steamer, and conveyed to Rotumah Island, north of Fiji, where he arrived in a dying condition.) THE WHARF LABOURERS' STRIKE. Received March 17, 1.8 a.m. SYDNEY, March 16. The Carters' Union, Seamens' Union and Cooks and Stewards' Union have commenced a strike against the three coastal companies who are employing n^n-jnionists.
