PERSONAL.
A member of the Fourth (rough riders) New Zealand Contingent to South Africa, Sergt. J. B. Vallance, is at present lying seriously ill in Masterton Hospital. The Matron of the Masterton Hospital (Mrs Morrison) is reported to be somewhat improved in health, but it will be some weeks before she can resume her duties.
Mr J. C. Jobntfbn, of Whananaki, who was a candidate for the Bay of Islands at the last general election, is to again contest the seat as an Opposition candidate. Mr Wilfred Hood, son of Mr William Hood, of Masterton, and who is a member of the staff of the Union Bank of Australia, is at present on a holiday visit to Masterton. The Rev. S. G. Compton, has resigned the position of principal of the Clareville Maori College. The Rev. H. T. Stealey has been appointed to succeed him.
Mr J. Tait, in the office of Mr P. L. Hollings, solicitor, Masterton, has been notified that he has passed the first section of the L.L.B. examination. Full details of the result have not yet been obtained from Home, where the papers are sent. Mr G. E. A. Hood, local Inspector of Factories, who has been on a fortnight's furlough, has resumed duty. Mr A. Donald, who acted as relieving inspector, returned to the Wellington office of the Department yesterday.
Messrs P. L. Rollings, J. W. Cochrane, G. Townsend and J. C. Ewington, numbers of the Masterton Bowling Club, left for Napier yesterday in Mr Hollings' motor car, to take part in the Bowling Tournament in connection with the Napier Carnival.
Miss N. Gillespie, who acted as secretary of the Masterton Ladies' Swimming Carnival, and to whose energy the success of the function was in a very large measure due, has been presented by the Club with a set of handsome silver-mounted toilet ware in recognition of her services. ' The deHth occurred on Saturday of Mrs A. E. Harvey, wife of Mr A. E. Harvey, of Makpra Road, after a short illness. Ihe deceased resided formerly in Featherston. Besides Mr Harvey, a family of four children are left to mourn their loss, all of whom will have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in their bereavement. The body will be removed to Featherston this morning, where the funeral will take place.
