PERSONAL.

A Press Association telegram from Hastings records the death of Mr J. S. Buchanan, aged 70. He : was owner of Elsthorpe, until the station was acquired for closer settlement. Rifleman G. Hyde, who won the Championship tJelt at the Trentham Rifle Meeting, will return to Masterton this evening. He will probably be acorded a reception at railway station. The death occurred in the Masterton Hospital last evening of Mrs Holmwood, wife of Mr C. Holmwood, snr., of Bentley Street. The deceased was 67 years of age, and leaves a large family. The funeral will leave her late residence tomorrow afternoon.

Mr Charles Weston, late of the Upper Plain, who has paid a flying visit, to Masterton, says he is strongly impressed with the Waitara district, where he has taken up a considerable tract of country. He states there is abundance of grass, good crops, and beautiful weather. Mr Weston returns to Waitara to-day with 700 sheep which he purchased in Masterton.

At the annual meeting of the Masterton Golf Club, yesterday, eulogistic reference was made to the.-manner in which Mr C. C. Cox, the Secretary, had carried out his duties. The chairman (Mr W. P. James) said that the club were fortunate in possessing a Secretary who devoted so much time and trouble to his work. Mr Cox was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his services during the past year.
