COLLETT (WAIPAWA) LEADING FOR THE BELT.

This morning opened with ideal weather for shooting—a dull, heavy light, with a light steady wind. The men were marched to the 500 and 800 yards mounds. At the former, the Wellington Match, 10 shots at 500 and 600 yards, was commenced, and at the latter the Nelson Match was finished. High scoring was the order of the day at both ranges. Halliday, of Karori, and Johnston, of Dunedin, put up a possible at 800 yards, and Turner (Karori), Geddis (Green Island), Purnell (Wanganui) and Hodder (Karori) eaih scored 34. The winner of the Nelson Match turned up in Rifleman Mawley, of Opaki, who put up 34 at 800 yardfj The following is the prize list: — NELSON MATCH (500 yaids, 600 yards, 800 yards). At the 500 yards of the Wellington Match, the scoring was still high, and although there were no possibles there were several 49's. These were put up by Trent (Christchurch), Johnston (Owaka), Atkinson (Auckland), Wilkie (Upper Hutt) and Timbrel (Christ hurch). At the 600 yards a uuft'y oreeze sprang up, but the light remained good, and there were a large number of scores above 40. Among these were Bolton (Pahiatua) and McCalley (Australia) 47, King (Christchurch) 46, R. Soler (Wanganui), Benton (Wairarapa), Johnston (Dunedin) 45. Much interest was taken in t'v: fey McCalley, who l'lug icveii blillseyes, then rang a 4 and 3, and finished with a bulls-eye. Bolton, however, beat him in the count. Captain King (Christchurch) wihs' ( the Union Company's Cup for the' highest aggregate scorer in the' Auckland, Wellington and Nelson' matches with a score of 268. The Canterbury match (900 yards and 1,000 yards) was commenced shortly after lunch. The weather up- j set most of the competitors, qnd Johnstone, of Owaka, who led in the aggregate, came to grief here, making only 25. The best score was made by Narbey, of Duvauchelles, who put up 49. Collett, of Waipawa, put up 46, which assisted him materially in the aggregate.
