BUSH AND GRASS FIRES.
BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. WHANGAREI, March 6. Serious grass fires have occurred at Whatitiri, causing much damage. Already the clearings of ten settlers have been cleaned bare. A number of sheep and cattle have perished. The owners managed to get 1,000 head into the shelter of distant bush. Over 2,000 acres have been left as barren as a desert. A 6-roomed house recently built and owned by Mr Telfer was totally demolished. Unless heavy rain intervenes the fire will continue for some miles further to the Wairua river. Two men were cut off, yesterday, and irade a perilous dash into safety. AUCKLAND, March 6. Mr Mackenzie, Crown Lands Commissioner, has just completed a tour in the Kawhia district. He states that some thousands of acres have been swept by fire. Te Raumoa and Oparau Valley suffered most, the latter being practically burned out. Many settlers must sacrifice their stock on a falling market. Dairy farmers have suffered severely.
