WANGANUI RACES. BY TELEGRAPH —rRESS ASSOCIATION WANGANUI, March 5. For the opening day of the autumn meeting the weather was cool and showery. There was a good attendance. Results:-

Stewards' Handicap.—Mahuta 1, Waipaku 2, Dear Dolly 3. "Also started —Gl°am. Won easily. Time, Imin 43 3-ssec.

Petre Hack Handicap.—Contair 1, Carissima 2, Waikaraka 3. Also started— Pareroa, Yosami, Miss Vera and Mania. Won by a length. Time, lmin 15 2-5:-iec. f

Westmere Hurdles. Maui 1, Pantaloon 2, Moeraki 3. Also started—Cachuca, Cassiopea, An interesting race, but won at the finish easily by four lengths. Time, 3min 58sec.

Tayforth Hauc Hurdles.—Ataahua 1, Aorangi 2, Claremont 3. Scratched—Xavier. Won easily by four lengths. Time, 3min 15 l-ssec. WANGANUI CUP. Uhlando 1 Waitapu 2 Tangimoana 3

All started. The winner led throughout, stalling off every challenge. Won by two lengths. Time, 3 min 3 4-ssec.

Juvenile Handicap.— Bunyon 1, Lady Menschikoff 2, Vasa 3. All started. Won by three-quarters of a length. Time, lmin 16sec. Wiritoa Hack. —Daisy Paul 1, Anemone 2, Belario 3. Scratched — Carissima and Yosami. Won by two lengths. Time, lmin 45 3-ssec. Flying.—Gold Thread 1, Kitchenmaid 2, Motoa 3. Scratched —Rangipapa, Toa Tuhi and Mom Ami. Won by two lengths. The amount put through the totalisator was £11,048, as against £12,406 on the first day last year. Thirty-six bookmakers were present.

AUTUMN HANDICAP. Jack Smith. 7.1 ... 1 Tulkeroo, 8.13 ... 2 Ganymedes, 7.13 ... 3 Six others started. Won by six and three-quarter lengths. Time, 2min 4'Jsec. —equalling the Australian record. There was a hostile demonstration in connection with the result of the race.

At an inquiry into the running of I Jack Smith, n .t the instance of Sir j Rupert Clarke, the explanations were accepted. Nursery Stakes. —Alawa 1, Dependa 2, Monodist 3.

Loch Plate. —Walk-over for Mountain King. Time, 4min 28« sec. River Handicap.-—Orline 1, JRtd Streak 2, Akim Foo 3. Won by one and a-half lengths. Time, 2min Djsec.

MASTERTON NOMINATIONS

Nominations for all events (except the Maiden Hack) for the first day's

racing of the Masterton Racing Club, on March 26th, close with the Secretary, Mr A. Hathaway, at 9.30 o'clock, this evening.
