CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING AT

HOBART.

There was a very large attendance at the opening of the Athletic Championship Meeting. The weather was dull but fine. At the close of the day's proceedings New South Wales scored three championships, New Zealand two and Tasmania one. Owing to Press being kept a considerable distance from the running track they were not able to give a satisfactory description of the racing. Results 100 Yards—Barker 1, Morgan 2, Fay 3. Won by six inches. Time, 10 l-ssec. Mile Walk.—Kerr (New Zealand) 1, Stubberfield (New Zealand) 2, Smith 3. Won by ten yards. Time, 7inin 23 3-ssec.

Running High Jump.—Orbell (New Zealand), sft lOin, 1; Maher, sft 9in, 2; Scott, sft Bin, 3. Orbell jumped beautifully, and it was thought he would equal the record of sft lljin, but he failed.

Mile Running.—Clemes 1, Burrowes 2, Retford 3. This was a great go, Burrowes leading till nearly home, when Clemes put in a fast run, and won by less than a foot. The others were close up. Time, 4min 38sec.

120 Yards Hurdles.—Stewart and Davis tied in the final, and are to run off on Monday. Murray won his heat in fine style, but could not pace it with the others. Time, 16 l-ssec.

Putting the Shot.— O'Reilly, 38ft lOin, 1; Kearney, 35ft lin, 2; Maher, 34ft 9in, 3. 440 Yards. —Barker 1, Davis 2, Fisher 3. Barker first led, but was displace.! by Davis and Fisher. When within 100 yards of home Barker put in a capital sprint and won easily by ten yards with tiiree yards between second and third. Time, Olsec.' The first two moil receive special badges for running the distance under the standard time.

One Mile Walk Handicap.—Ford (Tasmania), 30sec, 1; Rose (Tasmania), 20see, 2; Stubberiield (New Zealand), lOsecs, 3. Time, Bmin 4sec,
