FLEMINGTON, February 29. There was dull weather for the opening day of the V.R.C. Autumn Meeting. A good large field lined out for the opening race and with the exception of a spill a good race resulted. Portcullis fell and broke his shoulder, and had to be shot. Only a little excitement was centred in the St. Leger, the result being fully expected. Mountain King was In fine fettle, and had his own way ii'Oin the start. Results: Hurdles. —Sustain 1, Coronation 2. Paraloch 3. Ten others started. Won by six lengths. Time, 3min 47sec. ST. LEGER. Mountain King 1 Peru Lady Rylston 3 Mountain King jumped off from Peru and Lady Kylstone, who were all pulling. Mountain King passed the stand two lengths in front of Peru and four lengths in front of Lady Rylestone. On the far side Mountain King was a length ahead of Peru, and was half a length m front approaching the straight. Lady Rylestone spurted, but Mountain King got away, and entering ths stiaight unextended won by four lengths. Time, omin 6 3-ssec. Newmarket Handicap.— Scotland 1, Grenadier 2, Akitn Foo 3. Scotland was first to show up from Antonio, Dusky Morn and Tangeroa. After a furlong had been covered Farquair was leading from North Head and Step Out. Turning into the course proper Scotland led from Dusky Morn and the field. The New Zealand horse then made way for Grenadier and Akim Foo. Won by two lengths. Time, lmin 14 3-ssec. Sires Produce Stakes Mother Goose 1, The Brewer 2, Kuban 3. Won by a head. Time, lmin 142 sec. Essendon Handicap.—Apologue 1, Talkeroo 2, Booran 3. Won easily by four lengths. Time, 2min 37|s6c. Brunswick Stakes.—Sivoy 1, Lady Esme 2, Lancasterite 3. Won by one and a-half lengths. Time, 2min 9Jsec.
