PaRIS, February 28
It is reported than, the. examining magistrate has evidence that in connection with the jewellery furnished by Lemoine to a South African magnate, fusible plugs had been used in connection with the crucibles to conceal real diamonds.
Lemoine, who lived in the Montmartre Quarter, Paris, is an engineer.
In 1905 Lemoine is said to have proceeded to London, where he saw Sir Julius Wernher, of Wernher, Beit and Co., whom he told that he'had found the secret of the manufacture of diamonds, and that the secret was deposited in a London bank. Sir Julius, who at first appeared incredulous, was.in the end convinced, and on different occasions advanced to Lemoine for the purpose of making experiments sums amounting, it is stated, to 1,600,000 francs (£54,000). An experiment took place, but Sir Julius being of opinion that he had been the victim of a swindle, complained to the French police, and Lemoine was arrested.
