The new Departmental regulations respecting the purity of milk came in*,o'force, yesterday, and as complaints have been frequent respecting the quality of the milk supplied in Masterton it is as well that vendors should know what the main provisions are. It is made illegal to place any cans or utensils intended for the carriage of milk on a public footway or pavement. No milk must be mixed or manipulated, and properly constructed buildings must be provided for cleansing and rinsing cans; all carts must be washed every day; no preservatives must.be used; a person suffering from an infectious disease is not allowed to handle milk; and in-order to prevent contamination in shops, the greatest cleanliness must be observed, and nothing likely to injure the milk must be- stored in the milk shop. All these regulations are in the interest of the health of the consumers of milk, but the first one was evidently drawn up without sufficient thought. Milkmen must have some temporary resting places for their cans as they go their rounds, and as are prohibited from placing them on a comparatively clean footway or pavement they will probably, in order not to defy the law, place them on the dirtier streets, or perhaps in still more objectionable back-yards or rights-of-way. In order to carry out the new regulations effectively additional inspectors will probably have to be appointed. .
