A WEAK RESOLUTION.
If the action of the Chamber of Commerce was somewhat disappointing in regard to the telephone service, yesterday, it was equally so in respect to th« opening up of the Whareama estuary as a tourist resort, and for the purpose of enabling a fishing ndustry to be established there. The matter* has been before the public for some considerable time, and it might have been expected that at its meeting yesterday, some more definite action would have been taken by the chamber than the passing of a resolution which mildiy expressed approval of the suggestion to open up the river as a health resort, and entirely overlooked the fishery part of the question. True, there is divergence of opinion upon the latter, and the Chamber did not appear to know much about the subject, but it was at least worth while taking steps to more fully investigate it. As to the resolution in favour of a tourist resort on the Whareama the flacid affirmation is of little practical value. Had the Chamber appointed a deputation to wait upon the Minister in charge of Tourist Resorts and the Minister of Marine, something of a definite character might eventually have been arrived at. The Chamber of Commerce must stir itself a bit if it desires to be considered an effective representative of the industries and interests of Masterton.
