SCULLING.
GEORGE TOWNS AND THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
BY TELF.GKAVH —r-RESS ASSOCIATION' Received February 27, 9.37 a.m. SYDNEY, February 27. George Towns, ex-scolling champion, interviewed, said though he had hoped Tresidder would be victorious, he thought Webb would win. No doubt Webb must have improved considerably. If backers could be found, Towns said he might think of rowing for the championship. His brother Charlie had no thought of trying his luck again. He had been too much disgusted with the last race. There wer?. plenty of good young scullers, but they were not equal to championship form. He thought Arnst ought to stand a very good chance against Webb. BY TEI.KORAPH - WITSSS ASSOCIATION. PALMERSTON N., February 27. William Fugvvell passed through Palmerston North to-day, en route for Wellington, where he joins the s.s. Moeraki on his return voyage to Australia. Interviewed by a Press representative, Fogwell stated that he would probably return to New Zealand in about a month's time and take up his residence at Wanganui. He will train Arnst for his match with Webb, but will not definitely decide on challenging the winner until later on. Fogwell states positively that Arnst will row as a New Zealander, and . not, as has been stated, as an Australian. The match will probably not take place till November, as the Wanganui River will be too subject to flooding before that time. Fogwell thinks that the race will be the hardest Wsbb has yet had to row.
