The latest return from the Masterton Dredge is 51oz 7dwt for 138 hours' dredging, and from the Mystery Flat 160oz Bdwt, for 137 hours.

The Carterton Borough Council have decided to purchase 500 feet of hose and five sets of couplings for the Carterton Fire Brigade. A special meeting of the Trust Lunds Trustees will be held at noon, to-day, to deal with objections to the voters' list.

We understand from Mr Lowe, of the A.M.P. Society, that the Society's new branch office in Masterton will be opened on Monday next. It has been decided by the Eketahuna Chamber of Commerce to circulate the business people of that town with the object of observing Easter Saturday as a holiday.

During last week nearly 13,000 sheep were railed from Featherston to Wellington. This is the largest number of sheep forwarded from that town during the present season. Mr J. T. M. Hornsby, M.P., has informed the Featherston Chamber of Commerce that he expects the erection of the new post office at Featherston to be put in hand in the course of two or thres months.

Mr F. T. M. Kissell, B.Sc.E., has been appointed consulting engineer to the Carterton Borough Council during the carrying out of the street ..improvement works in that town.

The Sydney "Daily Telegraph" says, concerning the sculling natch between Webb and Tressider:— "Webb's victory confirms that form he showed in beating Towns. It I makes New Zealand a kind of sculling Mecca, whither aspirants for the championship must go like pilrgims. Those who have any ambition in this direction must be made of pretty stern stuff. The New Zealander has stamina, as well as pace. Tressider, perhaps, ranks amongst the best of our estimated first freighters." It is fortunate that the Masterton Courthouse is not often required for evening sittings. The gaslight illumination in the large Court-room is most execrable, only six small jets supplying the interior with a meagre light.. Those who had clerical work to do under the dim and flickering light at the District Court last evening; found the experience most trying to their eyes. His Honor Judge Haselden drew attention to the bad lighting of the Courthouse on a previous evening sitting of the Court.

Makora Road widening—a very familiar topic in municipal discussions- was before the Works Committee of the Borough Council again the other evening. A number of residents in tht thoroughfare interested in its correct alignment attended bj invitation, and a verbal promise was received by the landowners in the street to give a strip necessary for widening purpose.". The Committee decided.to obtain this consent in writing, in the alternative steps to be taken under the Public Works Act to acquire the land necessary.

The non-appearance at the calling of their names of Richard Field and George R. Irvine, summoned as jurors to attend the District Court yesterday morning, resulted in each being fined £5 by his Honor District Judge Haselden. The fine imposed on Irvine was afterwards remitted, as he appeared and gave his Honor a satisfactory explanation. Later in the day Mr Pownall informed his Honor that Field, who could not read or write, had been misinformed as to his subpoena, and in error had not appeared. The fine in this case was also remitted.

Through failing to appear in sup,port of his own application for discharge from bankruptcy, Lauritz Friis had his application postponed for three months by his Honor District Judge Haselden at the District Court at Masterton yesterday. The bankrupt . who was a sawmiller at Eketahuna and Dannevirke, was represented by Mr B. J. Dolan, acting under, instructions from a Dannevirke firm of solicitors. The Assignee's report was favourable, and his Honor said he always desired a bankrupt to be present on such an occasion, in case any creditors were present, and he saw no reason to, relax the rule in the present case.

The noise of the Borough steam roller crunchintr broken metal opnosite the Courthouse in Lincoln Road, yesterdav, was so deafening as to render the voices nf witnesses at the District Court sitting almost inaudible. His Honor, Judge Haselden, issued instructions to have the < roller's operations suspended during the Court sitting.

At the meeting of the Borough Works Committee, on Tuesday night, a request from the local butchering firms for a reduction of the slaughtering fees at the Abattoir was considered, in conjunction with a report from the Abattoir manager (Mr A. D. Gillies) on the .subject. The Committee decided that, in view of the number employed on the staff the time was not opportune to reduce the fees.

The Masterton Ladies' Swimming Club will hold their first swimmingcarnival in the Public Baths on \

Thursday afternoon next. A programme of eleven events has been drawn up, which includes swimming, diving and costume events and champion and handicap races for school girls. The principal event is the 'Xsvds Ladies' Championshio for a gold medal presented by Mrs Blackman. Nominations will close with the secretary (Miss Nellie Gillespie), on Wednesday evening next.
