Correspondence was received from the Mauriceville, Eketahuna, Carterton, oJ|d Levin Councils, regarding the comments made at the board's previous meeting as to the ways in which recipients of charitable aid in those parts spent their money. The letters showed that enquiries had been made into several cases, and that in odd instances alterations had ' been made. It was, however, stated by one board that the circumstances of applicants varied, and "a hard and fast rule could not be fixed as to what form of aid was to be granted." The town clerk of Levin wrote that he noticed there was soms stir as to the way in which the recipients of charitable aid spent their money, but it semed • to him that there was a minor matter; the chief thing was for the local authority to allow a fair and just sum based on the price of necessities, and then if the recipienl,«referred a tin of sardines to a couple of pounds of meat the clerk did not see that it made any difference to the local body. It was resolved to discuss the Hospital and Charitable Institutions Bill next month, when there will be a full meeting of the board.
