Messrs Bunny and Dolan are acting for bankrupt. Although there seems to be a plentitude of'"married couples" for stations in the local market, up Auckland way a dearth is being experienced, and a northern labour bureau proprietor has just written down to a local agency asking if there is any possibility of inducing some of the local "couples" to migrate northwards. The labour market is very quiet in this district just now. Speaking to an official of the Masterton A. and P. Association who is an enthusiast in the dog trials which the Association are now holding annually, a "Wairarapa Age" reporter learned yesterday that the trials this winter will be notable for the large number of Australian dogs which will compete. These dogs have been brought ovpr to do the rounds of the New Zealand collie trials. This year the local trials will probably secure a record gathering.

Only the farmer himself knows how valuable a good sheep or cow dog is to his master. One local da'ry farmer possesses a dog which is gifted with almost human intelligence. It musters the cows alone, and after yarding them in the waiting yard scans them eagerly, appearing for all the world as if counting them. Should a cow be missing he at once knows and makes off again to find it in the paddocks and bring it in. Occasionally two cows may be missed, and the intelligent canine makes two extra trips. Naturally his owner is very proud of him.

The Police Court Bench, yesterday morning, was occupied by Mr E. G. Eton, J.P. A second offendng inebriate, named J. O'Brien, was convicted and discharged with a severe caution,. a first offender being also allowed to depart without being mulcted in a penalty. Joseph Wiseman, who appeared in the dock with his head bandaged, was charged with being found unlawfully on the premises of the Prince of Wales Hotel. The Bench after hearing the evidence gave accused the benefit of a doubt which existed as to whether he knew he was committing an offence or not, and after warning him to leave the town within 24 hours, entered a conviction only.

It is not often that a girl under the age of eighteen years sits for a senior scholarship and the matriculation examinations in the same sitting, and secures both, aggregating the highest marks at the sitting. Thi3 is what has been accomplished by Miss Edith ("Fluffy") Murray, an exceptionally clever daughter of Mr J. L. Murray, of Masteiton. As the scholarship only entitles the winner to attend the Wellington Girls' College, and the matriculation examination papers are in advance of what is taught there. Miss Murray intends continuing her studies at the University The success of this brilliant scholar reflects great credit on the staff of the Masterton District High School, . under whose tuition Miss Murray was. Miss Aileen Murray, her sister, had the misfortune to fail by one point only in the Latin paper, otherwise she, too, would have also passed the examinations referred to. The judging classes for "student" judges are undoubtedly becoming a very popular section of the local Show schedule, as is shown by the large number of entries received this year. No fewer than twenty-nine entries were received for two competitions, and the greatest interest was evinced in the results, not only by the competitors, but by outsiders, and more particularly the exhibitors. The utility of the competitions lies in the fact that the competitors have to state the reasons for placing the animals in their various positions, and it can thus be ascertained exactly what practical knowledge is possessed by. the competitors, and how well qualified they may be judged. The two classes chosen at the last Masterton Show were English Leicesters and draughts, and the winner of the former was a very young judge, Mr H. Lancaster, who in beating some old and experienced breeders, acquitted himself very creditably.

The pneumatic action of the organ has been restorpd, and other important details attended to. Whitcombe, F. Holloway, R. Nitz, J. Fitzgerald. A. Buick, R. W. Matthews, J. Murphy and J. E. Devine.

"Would it pay the Masterton Association to.hold a winter show, es at Palmerston North?" was the queiy put to a leading member of the A. and P. Association, yesterday "It might.be of a certain educational value to the farmers, but it would almost assuredly be a financial failure for the Assoication," was the reply. "The Manawatu Association, for example, if it debited the winter show with all it was entitled to, would undoubtedly find that the show involved an actual financial loss, but, o$ course, the dairy farmers find the show of immeasurable value to them, and Palmerston itself is crowd3d with visitors for practically the whole week, so much so, in fact, that it is difficult to get accommodation at the hotels. Masterton, again, is not a dairying centre, and it is unlikely that many dairy farmers from other parts would attend it."

An interesting fact in connection with an old "world's championship" sculling match concerning the communication of the result in New Zealand, is related by a Mastertonian, who was a telegraph- operator in "Wellington General Post Office at the time. It was one of the races between Beech and Hanlan, rowed on the Parramatta river (New South Wales) some twenty- years ago, and the Chief Postmaster had instructed that when the news was about due all other work should be suspended. The telegraphic operators eagerly waited at their instruments for the receiving machine to "click" out the intelligence. There was great excitement in the office over the event, as, indeed, there was everywhere, and all nerves were strained waiting to catch the first "click." It was a "b," and the delighted operators waited for no more. A score of machines instantaneously flashed "Beech" to all corners of the country, and the result was known everywhere practically before the winner's boat had pulled up—a smart piece of cable and telegraphic work.

Particulars and prices of certain lines will be found in another column.. At 2 o'closk, to-day, Mr M. 0. Aronsten will hold his first auction sale in the Post Office Auction Mart, when he will offer on behalf of a client well-assorted and first-class household furniture. The sale will be held absolutely without reserve. Cenci's, millinery specialists and ladies' outfitters, of Wellington, announce elsewhere in this morning's issue that they will visit?- Masterton early in March with a special display of the new season's autumn millinery. Further particulars as to the display will be announced at a later date. The various lines to be sold at the restaurant, Bannister Street, this afternoon, by Mr J. R. Nicol, on account of Mr F. Staples, are practically new, having only been in use a few months. The whole of the goods will be sold without reserve, as the business has been closed.

Mr J. Gayfer, a member of the Totara Lodge, U.A.0.D., Carterton, has won the gold medal offered by the Lodge for the member who secured the moat new members during the year. The Dunedin butter market shows no signs of a further rise, at least of no immediate advance, and that prices will advance to 2s and 2s 6d per lb is not looked upon seriously by Dunedin merchants.

Brown, who has been entrusted with the work. Mr Brown states that he has had to place himself in correspondence with people as far north as Auckland and as far south as Dunedin in connection with the history. A •considerable amount of data has yet to be collected before a start can be made with the literary work. The quarterly meeting of the Stonehenge Lodge (U.0.A.D.) was held last evening. Bro. L. The Masterton Rifle Volunteers hold their weekly parade on Friday evening, when Acting - Captain Brighting will be in command. The week end camp of the combined Greytown and Masterton Corps was very successful. It was held on the banks of the Waipoua river, Major Tate, of Greytown, being in command. Staff-Sergeant-Major McNair was present, and Acting-Captain Brighting, Captain Haslam (School Cadets), and Captain Charters. Dunedin registry office keepers report numerous enquiries for harvesting work, and men. offering themselves at lOd per hour exceed the demand. General farm hands, milkers, and ploughmen cannot be obtained, and there are daily enquiries for this

Station cooks, for whom up to 32s 6d per week is offered, are difficult to obtain. The domestic servants simply cannot be got, and easy positions in hotels at 15s a week are advertised, but seldom mset with any response.
