SOLO COMPETITIONS.

TIY TI'LEOK.VPII - PRESS ASSOCIATION. 'NEW PLYMOUTH, February 24. The Band Contest opened to-day, when the baritone and flugal horn solos were decided. Owing to the South Island bands missing the train connection at Wellington on Saturday mor..ing, the hour of starting was postponed from 9 a.m. till 2.30 p.m. to enable the competitors from the south an opportunity of competing should they arrive in time. Only one or two, however, did so, and the committee was unable to delay the start any longer without upsetting the whole programme.

The baritone solo resulted: — W. Munro, Ist Battalion, Auckland, 67 points, 1. G. A. Day, Nelson Garrison, 66 points, 2. G. Jensen, Wanganui Garrison, 65 points, 3. The others who competed were: — E. Gilbert, Ist Battalion, Auckland, 64; H. Flatt, Nelson, 60; G. Austin, Taranaki Garrison. 59; B. May, Hastings, 60; J. Weir, Manaia, 52; A. S. Fulljames, Auckland Mounted Rifles, 51.

The judge, Lieut. Herd, stated that the baritone music was a treat. Sixty was the maximum points for music, the balance being allowed for the class of music.

Only three competed in the flugal horn solo, the others not having arrived. The result was as follows:—H. Gould, Wanganui, 66 points, 1. G. Pearce, Taranaki, 63 points, 2. A. N. Hawkins. Ist Battalion, Auckland, 61 points, 3. The weather at present is showery, but shows signs of clearing. To-night the quartettes were decided, resulting as follows: Nelson Garrison, "Operatic Airs," 77 points, 1; Auckland First Battalion, No. 1, "Oberon," 75 points, 2. Woolston No. 1, "Hugenots, 74 points, 3. Alsn competed—-Hastings 73, Mornington No. 1 73, Mastertoh 72, Auckland Battalion No. 2 71, Woolston No. 2 71, Mornington No. 2 69, Taranaki Garrison 68. The winners, the judge stated, gave a very fine performance indeed, Auckland being not very far behind. The quartettes as a whole afforded him a good deal of pleasure. The Woolston, Mornington, Palmerston North and Marton Bands arrived to-night, and expressed disappointment at not being present to compete in the afternoon solos.
