MASTERTON SHOW.

COMPETITION RESULTS

The ground was in excellent order afc the commencement of the competitions at the Show, yesterday, but the light rain soon made the track slippery, and some of the leapers negotiated their jumps in a less confident fashion than they otherwise might have dona. One spill resulted in a rider named O'Brien, who was on a horse owned by Mr R. Morrison, sustaining a rather painful injury to his foot. He was taken into town, where Dr. Cowie attended him. It is not thought that any bones are broken, but O'Brien will be incapacitated for a week or two at least. The section jumping by the Mounted Rifle squads was also productive of a minor disaster. A rider in a Masterton squad was thrown heavily against a hurdle thiough his

horse slipping, as it was about to take the jump. The hurdle crashed ' into pieces under the weight of the horse itself, and the rider was dazed for a minute or two. He pluckily remounted, however, and finished out the competition. The entries in the various classes were excsllent, with one exception, and that was an unimportant section, viz., the pony jumping for ponies under thirteen hands ridden by a boy under sixteen years of age. The trotting horse in saddle attracted six competitors, and some wellknown racing trotters weie among the entries. The prize went to Mrs P. McLaren's grey gelding Jim Jim. A pony ridden by Donald Grant won the competition for ponies under 13 hands. Thirteen entries were made in the jumping event for ponies thirteen to fourteen hands, to be ridden by boy under sixteen years. The judge, Mr E. D. O'Rorlce, said the winner, Mr F. Shaw's bay mare Flirt, was a beautiful jumper, and was very capably ridden. Mr R. Cooper's Daystar was a good second. In the maiden jumping competition no less than nineteen competitors went the round of the course, and they were a good lot of horses, and a fine set of riders. Some familiar leapers put in an appearance, and the firstpnze, valued at £5, eventually went to Mr R. T. Sanson's Mona, a Westmere —Foulshot mare. The four Mounted Rifle sections treated the spectators to a little diversion, one of the local corps' sections meeting with persistent reverses. Sergeant-Major Ranby's Feilding section (which is not unknown here) were an easy first, a Masterton Mounted Rifles squad being awarded second. Staff-Sergeant Major Burr judged this event. The hunters' leaping event also produced a big crop of aspirants, seventeen going out. The judge recorded the fact that the competition was a splendid exhibition of jumping, and that only one point separ- . ated the placed horses after three rounds. There was no doubt about the quality of the jumpers, the performances of such horses as Mignon, Dick Turpin, Rata and others being well known. Mr W. Strang's bay mare Caroline, which won after a great competition, was very little ahead of Mr R. Morrison's Rata, which secured a meritorious second place.
