MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Ma&terton Borough Council was held last evening. Present.* —Crs Pauling (chairman), Temple, Pragnell, Prentice, Elliott, Haughey, Ewingto", Yarr. Mr H. C. L. Robinson wailed upon the Council tu enquire as to the Council's requirements re the drainage of the Yates Estate. He understood that cement pipes would be acceptable to the Council. He also asked the Council to arrange to put down the water mains at the same time as the drainage was being carried out, as this would do away with the necessity of digging up the roads twice. On the motion of Cr Temple, the matter was referred to the Works Committee.

Mr A. P. Rawson, representing the Wrigley estate syndicate, approached the Council in support of a request that they be permitted to put down earthernware instead of iron pipes. If the change were permitted it was intended to lay the glazed pipes on a concrete foundation. He pointed out that iron pipe 3 were being discarded in all important drainage schemes throughout the dominion.

On the motion of Cr Ewington, the request of, the syndicate was agreed to. The question of entertaining the firemen who intend to be present at the Fire Brigade Conference was brought up, a letter from the local Brigade and Fire Police being received on the subject. Cr Ewington supported a proposition to donate a sum towards entertaining the delegates, and it was decided to refer the matter to the Fiie Brigade Committee for consideration.

The sum of £l5O was passed to the executors of the Renall Estate in settlement of a claim in connection with a bridge in Pownall Street. The butchers of Masterton applied to have the charges made at the abattoirs revised with a view to a reduction being made -in the fees.— The matter was referred to the Abattoir Conmittea. They pointed out that they intended revising the charge being made for meat. The Secretary of the Masterton Butchers' Association wrote protesting again«t private figures being supplied to the Press in connection with abattoir matters.—Received. Cr Temple asked when plans and specifications were going to be called for Pownall and Cornwall streets. The work should be proceeded with at once, in order to be completed before the winter set in.— The Chairman replied that the specifications were to be prepared at once. t Cr Elliott put in a similar plea for Bentley and Villa streets, and received a sympathetic assurance from the Chairman. Cr Temple drew attention to certain repairs necessary in Renall street at j a spot where the footpath formation, had recently been carried out. It was decided to request residents in the locality who had benefited by the new footpaths to put in culverts. Cr Prentice moved that another public bath be put in adjoining the present one in Dixon street, * bath to be devoted to the ladies of Masterton. Also that the present bath be extended in order to provide a bath for the children of the community. Cr Elliott suggested that the matter be held over till the water supply was in a more satisfactory condition.

As the matter required a notice of motion Cr Prentice gave notice for next meeting.
