RIOTERS FIRED ON

Received February 14, 11.36 p.m. BOMBAY, February 14. There was serious rioting here, yesterday, which 'ed to the arrest of several Sunni Mohammedans, who had been making a demonstration against the Shach section. The police, when making the arrests, wei*e stoned and two of them were injured. The Police Commissioner and other European officers then fired on the rioters, killing five and wounding forty. Twenty are seriously wounded. Troops are camping in the streets, but everything is now quiet.

THE STRANDED BULGARIANS

WICKED AND MISLEADING REPRESENTATIONS.

Received February 15, 12.28 a.m. MELBOURNE, February 14.

Senator Best informed the Senate that the stranded Bulgarians came out as the result of the wicked and misleading representations of certain unscrupulous agents whom it was impossible to identify, ""he agents, said Senator Best, guaranteed to land therr in New Zealand or Australia, but would not be responsible if the Government of either country objected to their landing. They would have the right to claim their passage money back. The Bulgarians had been informed that they would get work as soon as they landed, payment at the rate of a pound a day being guaranteed until they secured employment. Senator Best added: "Even if the Government could discover the agents it is questionable whether they would have any control over them. I am making enquiries."

MR KEIR-HARDIE REFUSED A HEARING. j Received February 14, 11.36 p.m. DURBAN, February 14. A crowded labour meeting', held in the Town Hall here, developed into a tremendous uproar. Mr Keir-Hardie, the wfll-known- Labour member of the. House of Co-mnons, and others, were not accorded a hearing. The proceedings terminated in confusion.

The second event for Mr E. Daniel's medal was contested in the Municipal Baths last evening. The officials present were: —Starter, Mr J. Scott; check starter, Mr S. R. Edwards; judges, Dr. K. V. Hosking, Mr E. Daniel, and Mr E. Richards. The distance swam was 40yds, and resulted as follows: —Ist heat, S. Ball, 4secs, 1; J. Winchester, 3secs, 2. Time. 28 4-ssecs. 2nd heat, A. Kelly, 6secs, 1; A. E. Baker, 3secs,, 2. Time, 30secs. 3rd heat, A. Donald, ssecs, and H. Keisenberg, lOsecs, dead heatf! Time, 33 l-3sec. 4th heat, L. Shuttleworth, 3secs, 1; R. Mason, 6secs, 2. Time, 31 3-5 sees. Final, A. Kelly, 6secs, 1; H. Keisenberg, lOsecs, 2. Time, 35secs. The following handicaps have been declared by Mr E. Richards, handicapper for the third and filial event in connection with the trophy, which will be competed for on Monday evening next at 6.30 in the Public Baths: —66 yards handicap.-—lst heat: S. R. It has been decided by the Management Committee to hold a general meeting of all members of the Club in the Dominion Hall on Wednesday evening next, when matters in connection with the next carnival that it is proposed to hold will be discussed, together with other matters of importance to swimmers. Members who intend competing at the Napier Centre's Carnival are reminded that all entries close for the various events with the secretary at Napier on the 20th inst. Nomination forms can be had on application to Mr S. R. Edwards, hon. secretary of the local Club.
