CATHOLIC PICNIC.

The Park presented a gay .appearance yesterday", afternoon, the occasion being the combined Catholic picnic. From all the Catholic parishes betwean Hutt and Woodville, visitors, including a large number of children as well as adults, arrived in Masterton and gathered in the Park, where the day was devoted to amuse merits of all kinds, and a general reunion among friends from the different parishes. The visitors brought their own hampers, and dined in parties under the trees, and generally enjoyed themselves in picnic fashion. In the long list of sports events there were numerous races for children, the winners of which received trophies as a reward for their, fleetness of foot. The Very Rev. Dean. McKenna worked enthusiastically to secure the enjoyment of all, and he was ably assisted by the Revs. Father McKenna (Pahiatua), Father Cahill (Carterton), and Father Lane (Hutt), and Mr J. J. Kelliher, secretary to the committee. The results of the principal events were as follow: Boys' championship (gold and silver medals presented by the Hibernian Society, being first and second prize for points respectively). First distance, 100 yds, S. Hoar 1, J. Diggins 2, Murphy 3; second distance, 159 yds, S. Ho'ar 1, J. Diggins 2, Murphy 3; third distance, 220 yds, J. Diggins 1, S. Hoar 2, Murphy 3; points, S. Hoar .1, J. Diggins 2, Murphy 3. Catholic old boys' race, Hayes 1, D. Diggins .2. Girls' championship race, Miss Dobbyn (WoodviUe) 1. Calholic old girls' race, Miss Morris (Pahiatua) 1, Miss Scott 2. Swimming races— 40yds, H. Williams 1, S. Hoar 2; 50yds, E. Pelling 1. H. Williams 2.
