SAWMILLING IN HAWKE'S BAY
PRACTICALLY CRIPPLED BY BUSH FIRES.
BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. DANNEVIRKE, February 12. In an interview with a Press reporter the manager of the Hawke's Bay Sawmillers' Association, stated that the recent bush fires had practically crippled the sawmilling industry in the province. The output had fallen from an average of three and a-quarter millions to one and threequarter millions. It was absolutely impossible for the mills in Hawke's Bay to supply orders in time. Five mills ha'i been practically destroyed by fire, viz., Cohr's mill at Norsewood, Parsons' mill at Norsewood, Gammon's mill at Otanga, Fairburn and Co.'s mill at Pohui, and Anderson and Sons' mill at Piripiri. Other mills had suffered great loss in tram lines and badges. He consiered that £IO,OOO would be a low estimate of the loss over the province.
