MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council was held yesterday afternoon. Present — Crs W. J. Welch (chairman), W. Harris, J. Miller, J. Morris, H. 0. Toogood, A. Murray. C. Kibbell. Leave of abence was granted to Crs R. F. Beetham and J. Colquhoun. Mr Charles Avery wrote drawing attention to Rotopanga Road. The writer said that several slips blocked the road last winter, and he wished the road to be put into repair before winter set in.

The matter was left to Crs Murray and Kebbell and the Engineer to attend to. A- letter was received from the Chief Government Surveyor asking the Council to make proposals for the expenditure of Mr A. K. Hansen's thirds.—On the motion of Cr Murray it was decided to hand the amount of the thirds (£10) over to the Akitio County Council to expend.

Mr C. E. Gill wrote in reference to the Moroa Road bridge controversy, stating that he and Mr Pol were now agreeable to abandon the idea of a Dawson suspension bridge and to have their thirds expended on a truss bridge on the old line of road. The letter stated that the bridge was desired before winter, if possible.

Cr Togood thought that it was advisable to settle the matter there and then. He moved that the Engineer be instructed to visit the old road, and select a new site for a truss bridge, and report to a committee composed of Crs Murray, Kebbell and the mover, the !atter having power to act.

Cr Kebbell was also in favour of this idea. He said that the matter had already occupied enough of the Council's time, and the latest correspondence proved how desirable it was to have the question settled once and for all.

Cr Togood's motion was carried unanimously. Cr. Murray also moved that a fresh consent for .£SOO be 'obtained for a new bridge on the old road, the loan to cove'' a similar area to that included in the last plan.—Carried. Mr Alexander McKay wrote consenting to act as a trustee for Langdale Cemetery. On the motion of Cr Toogood, it was decided that the Engineer engage hired carts to carry out repairs on the Waimata Road. The Finance Committee met in the morning, the financial position being reported as follows:—General Fund Account, dr., £4,898 16s sd; Local Bodies Loans Account, cr., £1,945 17s lOd; accounts, dr., £3.172 13s 7d; receipts since January 14th, £9Ol 3s 9d. Accounts amounting to £2,945 2s 6d were passed for payment.
