LONDON MARKETS.

HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT,

in TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. • WELLINGTON, February 10. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, February Bth : The mutton market is weak, and there is no change in prices. The lamb market is quiet, Canterbury brands being quoted at 6d per lb.

The beef market is steady. Hindquarters are quoted at Bid, and fore quarters at 2|d per lb. The butter market is very firm and excited. There is a strong demand, and supplies do not meet requirements. The market is active for future delivery. The following are current quotations:—New Zealand butter, 1365; Danish, 138s; Australian, 1325; Argentine, 132s per cwt. The cheese market is firmer, but prospects are uncertain. White makes are quoted at 61s, and coloured 625.

The hemp market is steady, and there is a better demand. Reports from • Manila indicate steady shipments for some time. Current quotations are: good fair grade on spot, £2B; fair grade on spot, £27; fair current Manila on spot, £2B 10s; January-March shipments, good fair grade, £2B; fair grade, £27 ss; fair current Manila £283 10s. The cocksfoot market is a shade weaker. Bright dressed seed, 17lbs per bushel, is quoted at 755. The'wool sales closed, superior and medium merino being in active demand at full rates, but inferior grades '■ are not in demand. The market for fine crossbred is firm in all grades, but for medium and coarse crossbreds in all grades the market is dull. The following are estimated * values : Superior merino, Is to Is 3d; medium. lOd to Is; inferior. 6£d to 9d; fine crossbreds, all grr dei, Is to Is 2d; medium, 9|d to Hid; coarse, 6Jd to 9d.

Messrs Dalgety and Company, Ltd., Wellington, have received the following cable messages from their London House, under date of the 6th inst: — _

Butter.—The market is very firm in consequence of short stocks. We expect higher prices. The total imports of butter into the United Kingdom for week ending Ist inst. amounted to 89,O0Ocwt, as compared with 82,300cwt for the corresponding week of 1907; showing an increase of 6,700cwt. Danish butter is 5s higher. Salted and united, 130s. Frozen meat—Prices; for mutton and lamb are unchanged. "'.Frozen beefPrices are lower. /Tallow— The market is unchanged,'but'there is a better demand. At present buyers show little or no disposition to operate. We believe prices have touched bottom, bo not expect any important change in prices in the immediate future, but prices may improve somewhat later on. Rabbitskins—Expect no material change in prices at sales. Hides—Prices are firm. Leather—Prices are weak. Basils— Since our last advices prices are lower by id to Id per lb.
